Janda Diner

Having worked in the hospitality sector previously, FORMstudio was delighted when friend of the practice Ady Yacob asked us to re-fit and reconfigure his beloved restaurant, Janda Diner.

Narrow design in Peckham…

On a tight budget, and within a narrow and uncompromising single-storey unit, balance had to be struck between functionality and aesthetic.

All of the previous cooking, food storage and prep equipment was reused and carefully shifted around the planform to better fit Ady's team and their sequence of working. The WC was altered to open towards the entrance, freeing up more space in the kitchen, and clarifying the zone between service and user.

Guests enter flanked by bespoke banquette seating, containing hidden LED strips that illuminate acoustic panelling. Pendant lights encloses tables in warm glow, enhancing the sense of intimacy and privacy between guests in what is still a cosy space, with the acoustic treatment keeping noise levels at a healthy buzz of intimacy and chatter.

Washes of 'Janda pink' create pops of colour that soften the bright, functional lighting of the kitchen at the back of the restaurant. Sat in front of this, the newly built bar uses a glossy black himacs counter with soft under-counter lighting that establishes the interface between seating areas and the main kitchen space.
